Designing for Cleanliness and Spirituality: Lessons from Houston Muslims

One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned as a designer is how culture and faith influence the way people live in their homes. Many of my Middle Eastern and North African Muslim clients have taught me the importance of cleanliness—a value rooted in their faith, where cleanliness is essential for prayer. This understanding influences how I source materials and furnishings for their homes. For example, I prioritize textiles that are easy to clean and maintain, ensuring that spaces not only look beautiful but also support the daily practices of my clients. From durable rugs to wipeable dining chairs, every choice is made with their lifestyle and beliefs in mind. Being able to weave these considerations into my designs allows me to create spaces that are not only functional and stylish but also deeply respectful of the values and traditions my clients hold dear.
