Designing for America’s Most Diverse City

Houston isn’t just a city—it’s the most diverse city in the United States. As an interior designer based in Houston, I consider it a privilege to step into homes and businesses that reflect a myriad of cultures, traditions, and histories. Designing these spaces allows me to experience the beauty of each culture while ensuring that the final design is both authentic and personal.

One unforgettable experience was working with a client from India who taught me about the significance of color in her culture. For her, black is seen as a bad omen and isn’t even worn at funerals, where white is traditional. Understanding this, we carefully avoided black in her home, even in details like the front door color, opting instead for shades that brought comfort and positivity to her family.

Another South Indian family asked me to incorporate peacocks into their design. Peacocks are a significant symbol in Indian culture, and they provided the foundation for a jewel-toned color palette. This allowed us to weave together traditional Indian elements with modern touches, creating a space that felt both timeless and true to their heritage.

Additionally, I’ve encountered practical challenges unique to some South Asian and Middle Eastern households, like ensuring kitchen countertops are resistant to turmeric stains. Turmeric is a staple in many cuisines, but its vibrant color can leave stubborn marks. This has taught me the importance of selecting durable, non-porous materials like quartz or sealed granite, which can handle the demands of these households while maintaining their beauty.

Every culture comes with its own beautiful individuality, and learning to reflect that in design is one of the greatest honors of my work.
